Faure wrote and published relatively few orchestral works, but those that he did were masterpieces of Gallic charm and elegance. This CD offers many of these hard-to-find works, and it is well recorded and performed, from the jaunty Masques et Bergamasques, the serene Pavane, the magical Dolly Suite (a precursor to Debussy's own Children's Corner), the beauty of Shylock, the ethereal grace of Pelleas et Melisande and his famous Requiem. Faure, a retiscent man, is a much underated composer. His choral works, solo piano works, and many songs aptly demonstrate his genius for creating beautiful melodies that stand the test of time and touch us today. And it was Faure, more than any other man, who provided the bridge between the traditional classical styles of Chabrier and Saint-Saens (his teacher) and the French Impressionism of Debussy and Ravel (his student).

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely gorgeous!, March 29, 2000

This is an absolutely lovely compilation of Faure's music. Beautifully orchestrated! The CD has great sound, very clear and the recordings are wonderful. Without a doubt one of my new favorite CDs! All the songs are brilliant, but my favorite is Pavane; it is elegant and simple but extremely moving and a bit haunting. This CD would be a welcome addition to any classical music lover's library.

I bought this cd not knowing anything about Gabriel Faure's music. A local orchestra was planning to perform Masques et Bergamasques, so I picked this cd being the most inexpensive way of buying something I possibly was not going to enjoy. But nothing could be further from the truth. I love this cd! It has such a nice variation of formats: piano concerto (Ballede in F sharp major Op. 19), piano solo (Baracarolle No.1 in A minor, Op. 20), vocal (Requiem, Op. 48), and symphony (Masques et Bergamasques). The music is also well played by various artists...no complaints on the performance side. And if it is true that one becomes the thoughts and vibrations that one allows to enter his or her mind, then by listening to Faure you may find yourself becoming a bit more tender, patient, and even romantic in your ways.
